List of Robberies and Piracies during the month of
December, compiled from the native press.
Canton. A funeral party was stopped by pirates near Canton, and, of the two women mourners, one was pushed into
the river and the other carried off.
72 Hang Shang Pao 9.
The cost of fuel has gone up enormously in Canton
owing to the ravages of pirates on the North, East
and West Rivers.
72 Hang Shang Pao 10.
Whampoa. The telegraph office at Whampoa was attacked by bri-
-gands on the 12th. instant. The manager was killed
and several thousand dollars stolen.
Hua Yen Pao 16.
Heng Ho. The Tou Men ferry boat was pirated a few days ago at
Hang Ho. One of the crew and two passengers were
killed and three or four passengers wounded.
Yang Ch'eng Pao 23.
On December 28 three robbers stole about $1,000 from
a grain shop near the East Cate of the city in broad daylight. The police were called out but the
robbers got on the roof and fired at the police and
managed to make their escape.
72 Hang Shang Pao 30.
On the 25th. the railway station at Hsin Chish was
robbed and on the 26th. that at Kuo T'ang. All the
money and grain found in the stations were taken to- "gether with the employees' clothes.
Kao T'ang. Akirmish took place at Kao T'ang on the 27th. between the troops and some brigands. The latter
lost one killed and seven captured.

North. River.
Shao Chou. Two ferry boats were pirated recently. In one
