OSMIUM. -
The peroxide (05 04), commonly called osmic acid,
is produced when the metal is heated strongly in air or oxygen,
and forms colourless acicular crystals freely soluble in water,
and very volatile. At about 1000. this compound gives off an
extremly irritating and irrespirable vapor, and hence the name
of the metal, from the Greek word osme, odour, It produces &
permanent black stain upon the skin, and at the same time causes
an erruption which is difficult to heal. It violently attacks
ail mucous membranes, and its vapor may cause partial or total
ix
blindness by depositing a film of metallic osmium on the eyes.
A solution of the peroxide is employed in histological work
for staining fat and nerve substances.
