I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to acknowledge

the receipt of your letter No.32189/1913, of the 23rd.
ultimo forwarding copy of a despatch from the Governor of
Hongkong in which it is suggested that the settlement of
certain questions should form a condition of the recognition
of the Chinese Republic by His Majesty's Government.
With regard to His Excellency's suggestion I am to
inform you that Sir E. Grey's views communicated to you in
the letter from this Office of the 12ta. ultimo remain
unchanged. He has, however, in accordance with Mr.
Secretary darcourt's request, instructed His Majesty's
Chargé d'Affaires at Peking to take an early opportunity
of bringing to the notice of the Chinese Government the
question of the draft Customs Agreement.
