With reference to your letter 24495/13 of the
22nd ultimo, I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey
to transmit to you herewith, for the information of
the Secretary of State for the Colonies a copy of a
Despatch from His Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires at
Peking enclosing further correspondence with the
Governor of Hongkong on the subject of the transmis-
sion to the Peking Cabinet of messages from Chinese
Merchants resident in Hongkong.
Sir E. Grey,while fully realising from the
circumstances referred to by Sir H. May the difficulty
of the situation at Hongkong, sees no reason to alter
his previous decision, and proposes, subject to Mr.
Harcourt's concurrence, so to inform ''r. Alston.
