I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to acknow-
ledge the receipt of your letter 26153/13 of the 1st in-
stant enclosing a copy of a telegram from the Governor
of Hong Kong respecting the protection of the Chinese
section of the Canton-Kowloon Railway in the event of
hostilities between the northern troops and the Kwang-
tung rebels.
Sir E. Grey concurs in the desirability of the line
being protected provided the Military Authorities con-
sider the project feasible and the force at Hong Kong
sufficient for the purpose.
The Secretary of State would be glad of early in-
timation in the event of its being decided to take de-
finite action in the matter as he would desire to in-
struct His Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires at Peking to warn
