INDIA OFFICE,
WHITEHALL,
LONDON, S.W.
27th. May 1913.
Sir: -
I am directed by the Secretary of State for India in
Council to acknowledge the receipt of your letter No.23552,
of the 24th. May on the subject of the Macao opium
agreement, and in reply to inform you that His Lordship
sees objections to concluding the agreement for definite
periods of five years, as the power of increasing the opium
import, given in certain conditions by articles 5 and 6,
leaves an element of uncertainty as to the amount of opium │
that will be actually required. His Lordship is, however,
willing that the period of notice should be extended to
twelve months, as suggested in my letter, R. & S.1542, of
the 8th. May 1913,
The Under Secretary of State,
Foreign Office.

I have &c.,
