His Excellency did

not, however, at least in my opinion, show a correct apprai

ciation of the qquity of the Company's claims, and proba-

bly, on that account, he did not show a diaposition to

treat the matter in the conciliatory spirit which charse-

terizes the relations between Mexico and Gre t Britain.

I, at once, transmitted a translation of Mr Las-

curain's letter to my Covernment, and I subsequently recal-

ved instructions to propose to the Vexican Government that

the matter should be submitted to arbitration. I accord...
