I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to acknowledge

Eve

the receipt of your letter No. 7530/1913 of the 6th instant

regarding the case of Miriam Monteith, at present serving

a sentence of Kine months' imprisonment at Hong Kong.

Sir E. Grey is informed that there is reason to suspect

the possibility of Monteith being in receipt of remittances

Should it prove that she is

thereby in a position to pay her own passage to England or

elsewhere I am to state that there would be no objection,

from some source or other.

so far as this Office is concerned, to ner being allowed to

select her destination.

Should she however decline or be unable to defray

her expenses herself, Sir E. Grey regrets that he does not

see his way to agree to the proposal that the cost of ner

passage to England should be charged to the Votes administered

by the Foreign Office, and failing any other alternative,

The Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office.
