is rapidly rising in value, for the purpose of erecting permanent tanks for the storage of oil fuel and they base the proposal on

the ground that the object they have in view is the maritime

protection of the Colony and its trade. The Colony already pays a very large sum for its defence, and I do not think it should be

called on in the present case to do more than offer the land with-

-out auction at a price which is already below its market value,

and which in the course of a few years will probably represent

a considerable sacrifice.
