GOVERNMENT HOUSE.
HONGKONG. 30th. September, 1913.
In continuation of my Confidential Despatch of
the 19th. September, I have the honour to inform you that I have
received letters from the Consul-General at Canton on the subject
of the execution of Chan King Wa (Chén Ching-hua).

I enclose a translation of the first tele ram
received by the Tutu from Peking. As action thereon was deferred it
was followed up by two more telegrams the latter of which couched in
peremptory terms, was received on the evening of September 15th.

I enclose a copy of an extract from a minute by Mr. Hallifax, Secretary for Chinese Affairs, giving an account of the events which preceded Chan King Wa's death. On receiving the last of the three telegrams from Peking the Tutu showed the Presidential instructions to Chan King Wa who realised that he was
to be put to death and attempted to poison himself on the spot with sublimate of mercury, a supply of which he always carried on his
person.

lir. Jamieson remarks with regard to the manner
in which the execution was carried out that it has to be borne in
mind that the deceased was not an ordinary Police Officer in our sense of the term, but the head of an armed Military Constabulary numbering 8,000 strong and as such liable to be brought to account under martial law. He adds that he has learnt privately that the
