I feel very much as Mr. Robinson does about the
cuns
demands of the University. I suppose we must agree to
the reservation of the land, but I would reserve
the right to charge a reasonable rent to be fixed when
the time comes for building on it the charge will
of course depend on the resources of the University
at that time.

GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
HONGKONG. 18th. August, 1913.
With reference to your Despatch No. 182 of the 24th. June, 1911, and to previous correspondence concerning the site of the Hongkong University, I have the honour to inform you that I have had under consideration the question of enlarging the boundaries of the area reserved for the University with a view to prevent prejudice to the future extension of the Institution.
In my Despatch No. 296 of the 18th. August, 1913, I have addressed you on the subject of the removal of the Service Reservoir and Filter Beds which it was proposed to locate on the major portion of the area marked 'B' on the plan here in enclosed In addition to throwing in the area proposed as a site for those works it is desirable to include the narrow strip (C) between the Principal's house and the University precincts and the narrow strip (D) between a nullah and those precincts, as well as the area mark- -ed 'A'. This area lies next to the property of the Church Mission-
-ary Society and apart from the question of possible future extens-
-ion of the University it would be very inconvenient to have it
occupied by houses for Chinese. I may add that an application has
actually been received from a Chinese applicant to acquire this site
for building purposes.
2.
I have, therefore, to recommend that the area
edged in red on the attached plan should be included in the
University
