72- With reference to your Despatch No. 320 of the

25th. October last, I have the honour to inform you that no expenditure has as yet been incurred under item 29 of the estimates for Public Works Extraordinary for the current year, because on

further consideration the conclusion was arrived at that the site

for the Service Reservoir and Filter Beds, chosen, as it was, be- -fore the University Buildings were placed on land immediately adjoining it, was open to the following objections;-

(a), serious interference would be caused, in course of

time, with the extension of the University; (b). the extension of building operations in the vicinity

of the University principally for a hostel and for students quarters, and the prospect of further building in future, render the site much less favourable for purposes for which it

is required.

In these circumstances an endeavour was made to find a better site in the neighbourhood, and finally negotiations were entered into with the Military Authorities for the transfer to the Colonial Government of portion of what is knom as Eliott Battery, with the acquisition of which the best available site for the Service Reservoir and Fliter Beds can be arranged. This site owing to the configuration of the ground and to the proximity of
