I have the honour to confirm my telegram of this,

date, of which a paraphrase is enclosed.

50/2700-6

On receipt of your telegram of 8th. instant, authorising the protection of the Chinese Section of the Canton-

-Kowloon Railway, I placed myself in communication with the General

Officer Commanding the Troops, with the Commodore, and with His

Britannic Majesty's Consul-General at Canton who consulted Major-

-General Kelly on latter's recent visit to Canton, with the result

that the following arrangements were made:-

1. Military Arrangements.

200 men of the 400 Indian troops nokrat Shamien are under

orders to guard the terminus at Tai Sha Tau.

1 Indian Battalion and 4 guns (10 pounders) are under

orders to proceed by rail from Kowloon to any desired

point on the line.

The Manager of the Chinese Section of the Railway has in

readiness at Tai Sha Tau an improvised armoured train.

2. Naval Arrangements.

Two Gunboats are in readiness to proceed from Canton to

Sheklung to guard the bridges there.

I do not anticipate the necessity arising for the employment of the Military forces as outlined above; but in the

meanwhile
