I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt
of your telegram of the 8th. August which was as follows:-
"Offer Clementi appointment of Government Secretary
British Guiana salary £1,350 to £1,500 by £50. Services urgently required in British Guiana and if he accepts will not be able to take leave in England. Telegraph whether accepted and if so date of departure":
and to confirm the following reply which I telegraphed on the 9th.
August:-
"Clamenti gratefully accepts. Starts as soon as practic-
-able. Will telegraph date of departure and expected
arrival".

Mr. Clementi now informs me that he has ascer-
-tained from liessrs. Thos. Cook and Son that, travelling vià Siberia
and Southampton, he could leave Hongkong on the 27th. August by the
S. S. *Empress of Japan" making connection with the International
Express which is due to arrive in London September 14th/15th and
that the first steamer sailing after that date for Trinidad will
start on the 24th. September, reach Trinidad on the 7th. October
and connect there with another steamer timed to arrive in Demarara
on the 9th. October. Travelling via Canada, Mr. Clementi would have
tame
to leave from Hongkong by the steamer which is due in Vancouver on the 17th. September. For the journey beyond New York the R. M.
