Legislative Council to have moved a formal resolution of thanks to Dr. Alabaster. I would also recommend to you, and I have informed Er. Alabaster that I would do so, that the value of the recognition be increased to #250. I would indeed have no objection to making it a cash payment of 2250 in addition to the present of books, if I thought that Ir. Alabaster would accept cash, which seems doubtful; and I would ask your authority to spend £250 on books and perhaps a piece of plate, or to pay £250 in cash in addition to the books.

In support of these recommendations I would

point out that the work of revision has been as heavy as that which Sir F. Piggott undertook, and that it was originally calculated that if Sir F. Piggott had carried out his obligations to the Printer he would have netted 83,000 out of the 14,000 which his revision was estimated to cost; while Sir John Carrington, although not directly remerated for the work on his revision, was ranted first 3 months' full pay, and afterwards owing to ill-health 6 months' half-pay leave, to do the work in. This leave represented

a sum of £1,000.

Whatever decision you arrive at in this matter

I have to ask that in the meantime a set of the Law Journal Reports and Lews Digest of Case Law be purchased by the Crown Agents and sent here with a suitable inscription for presentation to Mr.

Alabaster.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient,

humble servant,

Domay

Governor, ac..
