instructed him to inspect the premises and report on the same. A dag or two afterwards the contractor reported to me that there were several slight cracks in the wall. They were not serious. It would only be a small job repairing them. He was instructed to do what was necessary. His charge was $20. I did not see Chan Yik Tong about the mutter. I never heard that Au Yaung Sik complained of the dangerous state of the buildings. I took no steps as to what notices the Sanitary Board had served. I thought if the matter had been serious that we would have been notified by the Sanitary Board or Building Authority. As a rule we get exagerated letters from tenants and I felt if those cracks had come under the notice of
Sanitary Autmorities as stated in that letter and that they were really serious we should have heard from the Public Works Depart- -ment. We have had notices served on us by both Sanitary Board and Building Autority. I thought I would send my contractor up first before consulting our Architect.
Cross-examined by the guri.
We do not send for an architect until we have received a
report from our contractor.

The China Provident own quite a number of houses. The whole block was inspected by our architect in March last year. They reported that the block was in a fairly good state of repairs. was our intention to get it inspected alter the half year. Our architects are Leigh and Orange. That inspection was for valuation purposes. Our intention in June was to be a general structural inspection. I don't remember when we had our last general inspect- -ion. We did not keep an overseer to inspect our property. 2 or 3 days before the collapse we decided to have the inspection. Omers have to look after their own property. Letter 6 and the Sanitary Board notices had nothing to do with the decision respecting the inspection. Letter 6 may have influenced my decision about this block. We decided to have all our property inspected.
