At the end of last month Dr. Sun Yat-sen passed through Hongkong, his advent again coinciding with a sudden change in the Governorship of the Kuangtung Province, while the contrast in his reception by the Chinese throws an interesting light on the trend of affairs in China. It is said that he is on his way to

England.

In December, 1911, Dr. Sun's arrival from Singapore was eagerly looked for by the Chinese community both in Hongkong and in Canton. Lany preparations were made for a big welcome: the Chinese firms subscribed towards a reception for him: his ship, the "Devanha", was met by a number of decorated launches, and he held an informel, but crowded, reception on board. The banishment warrant issued against him by this Government in June, 1907, was rescinded and Sir F. D. Lugard notified him of the fact by sending off an Assistant Superintendent of Police to the "Devanha". A Chinese Gunboat came to Hongkong bringing dom the chief Canton Officials to meet him and a reception was arranged for him at the Un On Club. Dr. Sun sent an early message to say he would not attend, but would send his Secretary: and the reception was largely attended on these terms. The newspapers were full of Dr. Sun and his doings, and of telegrams of welcome. Dr. Sun did not land, but went straight on to Shangai in the "Devanha" taking withị him Wu Hon-man, the then Governor of Kuangtung and
