practicable to construct a catchwater large enough to convey
the yield during the heaviest rainstorms which occur in
Hongkong.
Should these measures be found inadequate, it will
be possible to construct further catchwaters which would
ensure the filling of the proposed reservoir.
3. In other respects, the scheme is on the same lines
as that originally proposed and all the works already carried
out under the First Section are fully availed of, only the
suction main from the Intermediate Reservoir being taken up.
It was pointed out in my report of the 17th October 1903
(Sessional Paper No. 3/1904) that this would have to be done
when the Second Section was carried out, the pipes being
utilized for duplicating the rising main from the Pumping
Station to the Tytam Tunnel Inlet.
4.
The estimate for a dam on Site No. 1 was $2,445,000
whilst that for the dam now proposed on site No. 3 is
$1,642,000. The total estimate for the modified scheme
(Site No. 3) is $2,017,000 whilst that for the original
scheme (Site No. 1) was $3,312,300. The estimate for the
modified scheme includes the following:-
(1). Masonry Dam to impound 1,500 million
gallons,
(ii). Two pumping engines, each capable of
raising 2 million gallons per day, thus bringing the total pumping capacity, existing and proposed, up to 6 million gallons per day,
(iii). Enlarging the pumping station build-
ings to accommodate the addition- al engines and extending pier,
(iv). Duplicating the existing 18" rising
and suction mains,
(v). Catchwater, road diversions and
widening of suction main track,

census of 1911 shows that the population supplied with water
