Lum Li owner of Trading Junk T. 446 H. reports that at
5 p.m.the 9th. instant when on his way from Tung Lung to Chan Tsun (W. River) and when off Tai Sing (E. of Saumun) 2 boats containing 20 to 40 men, armed with rifles and revolvers came alongside his junk. 8 of them came on board and covering the crew with the rifles, drove them into the hold, after which the pirates towed the junk nearer to the shore then took out all the arms and ammunition, some money and clothing. They then got the crew out of the hold, one by one, and hitting them demanded what money they had, after this they left the junk, so I raised my anchor and sailed to Samun where I reported the matter to the Customs. 3 of the crew were injured.
Tai Sing is the island known as
"Piedro Blanco" 50 miles
due East of Hongkong. Sa lun is a Chinese Customs Station just East of our waters in Bias Bay. Tung Lung is apparently a small port near Swatow and the Junk was bound from there, up the West River.
