Mr. BOTELHO, brother-in-law of the previous witness, was
next called and sworn, and gave his evidence in English. He said
he was under the bed at the time and on the afternoon in ques-
tion.

Witness said he could see up to the inspector's knees.
The inspector knocked at the door three times, and Mrs. Xavier
opened to him. He stopped when he was opposite the bed and kis-

Did you see it?

Witness said he did not see it, but he heard it.
inspector then went into the kitchen and stayed three minutes.
When he came back he took off his hat---
The Chairman said -
But you were under the bed,did you

Witness became very confused,coloured up, and said, No, I
did not see him take off his hat, but he kissed Mrs. Xavier. I
heard it. He kissed her twice. Then he got close to her.
The Chairman asked if the inspector sat on the bed?
Witness said he did not know, he could only see his legs.
The Chairman turned to Mr. Hewett and said I have not
been under the bed, but I think if a man sat on it I should know.
Then he asked Mr. Botelho again if the inspector sat on the bed.
Witness said he thought he did; it looked like it, but he
could not say for sure. He said he heard his sister ask the in- spector for sweets, and the latter said he had not been to town
to buy them. After that witness caught hold of the inspector's
ankles, and his brother-in-law sprang out of the wardrobe and hit
the inspector.
The Chairman asked witness why he caught hold of the
