Mrs. Xavier was the first witness against me, and her evi-
dence was interpreted by Mr. Carvalho of the Jolonial Treasury,
as she would not speak English, although she could speak English
to me.
She was sworn in the English fashion (she is a Catholic),
and asked to tell through Mr. Garvalho all that happened on the
22nd April. She got hopelessly mixed up as regards the dates
and time, being about 10 to 12 days out, but the Committee correc-
ted her. Mrs. Xavier, who has been married for about six weeks,
said that I knocked on the door, she opened it, and I asked per-
mission to see the kitchen. When I came back into the kitchen I
asked where the Aquino woman was, and she said she did not know.
I then put my arm round her neck and asked her if she loved me. She said, no. I then put my arm round her waist and drew her to-
wards me. I then put her hand on my trousers,ard felt outside of her clothing, and felt she had a cloth on, and I said it's no good, I will come back on Friday. She said, Go away, the arah is coming back. With that I left saying, Don't tell your husband, I will
