expenditure during 1913.

4.

The number of quarters required at present is

30 of which 18 are included in the 3 West End Park blocks and & in the Kowloon scheme, leaving four to be provided. There are at the present time 51 Sanitary Inspectors ani Overseers entitled to free quarters. Of these 15 are occupying existing Government quarters while 4 have been able to build small houses for themselves. It is considered that making allowance for officers absent on leave the number of quarters which is being provided will suffice.

A site for these last quarters has been select- -ed in the neighbourhood of Happy Valley, for officers whose duty lies in that quarter of the town, and I have to request your sanction to submit to the Legislative Council a supplementary estimate for the amount required to begin them this year. The complete cost is expected to amount to $35,000.

The quarters have for the most part been divided into sets of 3 rooms, with necessary kitchens etc. These it. is intended to allot to married couples with small families or to 2 bachelors. Some of the quarters have been arranged with 4 rooms for married couples with larger families. In the West End block there are 12 sets of 3 rooms and 6 of 4 rooms and in the Kowloon block 6 of 3 rooms and 2 of 4 rooms. The block to be erected near the Happy Valley has not yet been designed.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient,

humble servant,

Ama
