Enclosure 3.
Hon. Colonial Secretary,
221
I have seen the books etc. The figures given are
correct. As regards the particular items (a) includes all
operating expenses, maintenance and repairs. In 1911 this
expenditure amounted to £19,447. This year more repairs were done,
but it is not expected that the expenditure under this head will be
less than the estimates, although recently the car service was
reduced by 6 being a saving of 38 a day in wages and $230 a month
in coal. As regards (d). The amount standing to this account is
$30,000. The following sums were placed to ₫ its credit. In 1906
£6,000, 1907 £6,000, 1908 £4,000, 1909 £5,000, 1910 nil 1911
£9,000, averaging £5,000. £9,000 per annum is a proper amount
to place aside yearly for this service.
