In continuation of my Confidential Despatch

of the 29th, ultimo, I have the honour to transmit information in

more detail which the Registrar-General has been able to collect

since the date of my letter to Sir John Jordan on the subject of the political situation in South China. I find that one of the

telegrams mentioned in concluding portion of the Memorandum has

been sent to Peking, contrary to my instructions that Chinese

were not to mix in Chinese Politics. I have told the Bankers Guild

that if they wish I will communicate their telegram through the

British Minister.

Kwok Man Tong (Kwo Min T'ang) seems to have done much to crystal- -lise the opinions of the Merchant classes in Hongkong against that faction and its representatives in the Canton Government. A few

days ago there appeared in the local Chinese Press an announcement

that a number of members of the National Assembly had seceded from the Kwok Han Tong. This is the first public secession from the party and it is a good index of the revulsion of feeling against

it.

The information I have myself been able to

gather confirms that supplied to Mr. Hallifax, and points to the

fact that the leading members of the Government at Canton are

aware that their tenure of office will not last much longer and

that
