In continuation of my Confidential Despatch
of the 29th, ultimo, I have the honour to transmit information in
more detail which the Registrar-General has been able to collect
since the date of my letter to Sir John Jordan on the subject of the political situation in South China. I find that one of the
telegrams mentioned in concluding portion of the Memorandum has
been sent to Peking, contrary to my instructions that Chinese
were not to mix in Chinese Politics. I have told the Bankers Guild
that if they wish I will communicate their telegram through the
British Minister.
The repudiation of the Quintuple Loan by the
Kwok Man Tong (Kwo Min T'ang) seems to have done much to crystal- -lise the opinions of the Merchant classes in Hongkong against that faction and its representatives in the Canton Government. A few
days ago there appeared in the local Chinese Press an announcement
that a number of members of the National Assembly had seceded from the Kwok Han Tong. This is the first public secession from the party and it is a good index of the revulsion of feeling against
it.
The information I have myself been able to
gather confirms that supplied to Mr. Hallifax, and points to the
fact that the leading members of the Government at Canton are
aware that their tenure of office will not last much longer and
