Hongkong,

November, 1912.

The income, inclusive of fees, of the University for the

year 1912-13 is estimated at £9,000. This sum barely covers the expenditure and it is evident that, if the obligations which the University has undertaken in establishing the three Faculties above mentioned are to be properly discharged, a considerable addition to its resources is urgently required.

In the Faculty of Engineering the staff consists at present of 1 Professor and 1 Lecturer in Engineering, 1 Lecturer in Physics, 1 Local (part time) Lecturer in Chemistry, and 1 Local (part time) Lecturer in Mathematics. The Chinese are evincing extraordinary interest in this branch of study, as the preponderant number of undergraduates in this Faculty clearly shows. It is therefore desired to increase the Staff, in order to cope with the teaching of students whose number is expected to reach not less than 150 within the next three years, by the addition of 5 Lecturers in Engineering, 2 Lecturers in Science, 3 Demonstrators,

and 1 Electrician.

To provide for this increase in Staff a capital sum of £35,000 is required to cover salaries after making due allowance for increase in fees. This staff will not admit of Physics and Chemistry being taught beyond the intermediate examination. It is desirable to add to the staff in order that they may be taken for the final examination. Nor does the staff as outlined admit of teaching in Metallurgy, Mining, Railway Engineering, Kunicipal
