sir,

I have the honour to acknowledge the

receipt of your oypher telegram of the 6th.instant,

of which a paraphrase is attached and to confirm my 4.7438 reply of the 7th.instant, of which I also enclose a

paraphrase,

2. I trust that, in the interests of this

Colony, a better arrangement may still be arrived at.

I have reason to believe that I mucceeded in convincing

Senhor de Freitas of the reasonableness of my view a8

to Macao's requirements, although I am not aware

what recommendations he actually made to his Government

in the matter.

3. I beg leave to add with the greatest

respect that I am surprised that negociations in

London in a matter so vitally affecting this Colony

were permitted to reach the length they did without

any reference to me.

I have the honour to be,

sir,

Your most obedient humble servant,

Amaz

Governor,

&0.

The Right Honourable

Lewis Vernon Harcourt.M.P.
