who held frequent meetings at the house of Mr.

Wei Yuk. In January 1912 wu Hon Man, the Governor-

General, published in the local Preas an article

describing the part that Admiral Li played in the

revolution. The article opens with the following

words The establishment of the Kwong Tung

Republic was chiefly owing to the great services of

Mr.Li Chik-sing (Admiral Li) as was known to most

of the revolutionaries in Kwong Tung, and in Hongkong

to a certain person

surnamed wel" and others

(who are mentioned).

The article goes on to

describe the numerous communications with Mr.

Wei Yuk preceding the revolution. On this

article being brought to his notice, Sir F.Lugard

called upon Mr.Wei Yuk for an explanation.

Mr. Wei Yuk explained that the action he had taken

was in the interests of a peaceful revolution

and to avoid bloodshed and Sir F.Lugard has

left on record the following expression of his

opinion Having considered the whole circumstances,

and considering the details as set out above to

be accurate, I place it on record that in my opinion ir. Wel only erred in that he did not keep

and even this is me more precisely informed,- largely discounted by the fact that he told Lady Lugard, no doubt thinking she would tell me. In a sudden and very serious orisis it appears

that it was due primarily to Mr.Wei that a terrible bloodshed was averted, and his action was limited to averting that bloodshed and not
