Explanation given for the removal of misunderstandings.
During the last few days on account of Tramway boycott many comments have been made by the various papers exhort- -ing the people to patronise the tram cars as before. With referend to the paragraph in a certain paper on the subject to the effect that no person can be compelled to accept Chinese coins and any- body can lawfully demand payments of his wages in llongkong notes if in excess of $2, and any foreman who forces any workmen to accept Chinese coins will be liable to prosecution and punishment, this
requirement is not an ordinance newly enacted, but is an old law
of long standing. By the ori̟inal regulations of the Tramway
Company only Hongkong Silver was to be accepted in payment of
fares, and the former acceptance of Canton aoins by the Company
was merely intended as a concession to popular custom. Now it is merely on account of the heavy loss sustained by the Company that payment in Hongkong coins is strictly required instead in accord- -ance with the regulations. Fearing that this is not universally understood by all people, this explanation is specially published that so no misunderstanding may be entertained. It is our sincere hope that the storm of boycott will abate without delay that so no special rate may be levied to the injury of us Chinese.
