Having been informed that Captain Orr, Colonial Secretary

Cyprus, has resigned that appointment in consequence of ill-health

brought about by his previous employment in Nigeria, I have the

honour to apply for the post thereby rendered vacant.

-vice,

2. I have been for over thirty years in Government ser-

eighteen in the Royal Navy, and more than twelve under

the Colonial Office, and have earned the approbation of the

several superior officers under whom I have served. During my

time in the Navy, I served for six years in the Mediterranean, in- -cluding the Levant, where I had many opportunities of making my- -self acquainted with the character and modes of thought of the people, besides gaining a slight knowledge of Arabic, Turkish, and

modern Greek.

3. In my present post, of Harbour Master &c: at Hong- -kong, where I have now been stationed for over twelve years, ny health finally broke down, the climate of that Colony, which at first agreed with me, having eventually undermined my health, with the result that I was not expected to live when I embarked for hone in February of last year. I have already forwarded two certifi- -cates from my medical adviser, on which account I have been gran- -ted two extensions of my leave, and be still considers that, because of the state of my health, it would be very imprudent for

me to return to Hongkong.

4. Under these circumstances, if I an unable to obtain another appointment, the only course remaining to me is to apply

The Under Secretary

for

Colonial Office
