sir,

In reply to Mr. Read's letter of the 16th
ta
instant (32350/1912) forwarding a copy of a letter from the Crown Agents for the Colonies with regard to an exchange of the securities which they hold in respect of the note issue of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, I am directed by the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury to state, for the information of Mr. Secretary Harcourt, that, although the Bombay Improvement Trust Loan Debentures, which the Bank propose to substitute for the securities to be released, while guaranteed by the Indian Government, are not Trustee Securities, My Lords are willing in this instance to approve the proposed exchange.
Such approval must not however be taken as pledging Their Lordships to authorise the deposit as security against the note issue of further blocks of the same or similar stocks.
I am,
Sir,
Your obedient Servant, J.L. Heath
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
