The Secretary,

War Office,

HONG KONG,

8th February 1912.

Sir,

In reply to War Office letter No. Hong Kong 16/ 1291 (Q.M.G.l.) dated 15th November 1911, I beg to report that I have submitted the question of the rating of houses hired by the War Department, to the Colonial Government who reply "that the Attorney General advises that the houses in question are rateable and that the Assessor of Rabes has been instructed accordingly" but the question will be referred by them to the Secretary of State for a ruling on

the subject.

Should such ruling be contrary to the advice of the Attorney General the rates on the houses will be re-

funded.

They further inform me that no rates are charged on premises hired by the Colonial Government.

I have, &C• ;

(Sd) C.A.Anderson,

Major General,

Commanding the Troops,
