Article 39 of the Canten-Kowloon Joint Working

Agreement lays down that "In the event of any disturbance

"affecting the traffic of the Railway the Government on

"whose sectiun the disturbance cocurs shall be responsible

"for all loss (including the loss of maile) incurred by

"the other Government, #ta"

In their letter of December

19th to His Kajesty's Consul-General at Canton, the liab-

ility for compensation for the whole pariod during which

traffic was suspended, namely from November 7th to Dea-

ember 14th, is recognised in the most explicit terms by

the authorities of the Chinese Section themselves.

With regard to the alain for Seven Hundred and

Thirty Dollars, representing compensation, at the rate of

of the Agreement, the Goverment of Høngkeng maintain that

this amount formed part of their regular gross receipts

and consequently should not be subjected to reduction.
