IN connection with recent communications which we have had the honour to make to you on the opium question, we beg to put before you the following telegram received from Shanghai :-

"Delay in settlement of opium troubles, which are becoming more accentuated, causing panic. Can you ascertain from Foreign Office if can give assurance that an early and satisfactory settlement may be expected.”

May we hope that you will find it possible to furnish us promptly with such information as will reassure those interested in the opium trade in China.
