CONFIDENTIAL.

(No. 172.) R.

Sir Edward Grey to Sir J. Jordan (Peking).

Foreign Office, October 24, 1912, 8 A.M.

YOUR telegram No. 222 of 24th October. You can reply that Lady Piggott was informed in writing on 22nd October that I could not officially discuss the matter with her, and was sent a copy of the letter of 19th September from this department to her husband (sent under flying seal to you on 23rd September) with the intimation that I had nothing to add.

Lady Piggott's statement is therefore quite incorrect, and attitude of His Majesty's Government in regard to the appointment remains unchanged.
