MY telegram No. 208 of 9th October: Seizure of opium. Owing to rapid fall of water in river, consul-general has been obliged to go to Nanking.
Facts of the case having been clearly established, he thinks his return to Auking would serve no useful purpose, and suggests that the question should be set led here.
I should have greatly preferred settlement on the spot, but am willing to adopt alternative course if you consider it preferable.
