Draft Telegram from Foreign Office to Sir J. Jordan, Peking,

dated

0.

RECR

Your telegram No.155 (of July 16th).

REGE 23 JUL 12

I approve your renly to Sir F. Piggott.

In view of answer made by Chinese Government to your

previous inquiries we assume that they will not appoint him

If consulted you

without further communication with you.

can state that His Majesty's Government have grave doubts

whether the appointment, if made, would conduce to the

snooth working of the administration as experience has

shown that his peculiar temperament leads to constant

friction with those associated with him in the Government

and in the present state of China this might cause

undesirable complications external as well as internal.

If Sir F. Piggott approached you again you should say

that these are your instructions.
