With reference to the letter from this Department
of February 16th last, I am directed by Secretary Sir
E. Grey to transmit a copy of a letter from the
Board of Trade relative to the views expressed by
the Judge of the Supreme Court at Shanghai upon the
steps which it is proposed to take with regard to the
registration of British Companies in China.
A copy of the Board's letter was forwarded in
due course to Sir H. de Sausmarez, and I am to enclose
a paraphrase of a telegram since received in reply
relative to the objections to the proposals which
are raised by the Hongkong Government.
It appears to Sir E. Grey that Sir H. de
Sausmarez might usefully be instructed to proceed
with the preparation of the proposed draft Order in
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
