In my despatchi
No. 55 of the 1st of March last
I had the honour to state that I had received a reply
from the United States Government regarding the question
of the deportation of Chinese to llong Kong and that in
view of the unsatisfactory nature of the reply I had
caused the Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Labour
to be approached privately on the subject.
I have now the honour to transmit to you herewith
copy of a letter from the Department of Commerce and
Labour to the State Department showing the result of
these further negotiations. The attitude of the United
States Government now appears to be satisfactory and I
should be interested to learn whether the decisions they
have arrived at fully meet the wishes of the Government
of Hong Kong.
