With reference to the letter from this Department

of the 30th. of December last relative to the refusal of the

Imperial Japanese Patent Bureau to register the Trade Marks

of the british Cigarette Company I am directed by Secretary

Bir M. Grey to inform you that a Lespatch has now been re-

ceived from his Majesty's Ambassador at Tokyo reporting the

result of his enquiries on this subject.

Dir U. leclonald states that in the reply to a

note addressed by him to the Minister for Foreign Affairs,

the Japanese Government make no reference to the inapplic-

ability of the Japanese fraude Larks Law to british firs

domiciled or registered in Hongkong but base their refusal

to register the "Quaisin" and "Farmer Boy" marks on the

ground of their similarity to previously registered marks.
