Gentlemen,
With reference to your letter dated 26th
January last relating to the price charged for Boxes,
small, Stores Q.F.2.95", I am directed to inform you
that the original estimate of £1.12.0. each was based
on the assumption that the existing pattern box
could be satisfactorily adapted to meet the
Crown Agents requirements as to carrying the piston
rod &c., but, after consultation with the Chief
Inspector, Woolwich, it was considered necessary that
a new pattern box should be prepared. The heavy cost
is due to the fact that this small order had to bear
the whole of the initial expenditure incidental to
a first manufacture and it is estimated that similar
hoxes could now be made at £2.16.0. each.

notification of the increased expenditure was not sent
for your information, and in the circumstances it has
been decided, as an exceptional case, to make a refund
of the difference between the present estimated cost
and the amount charged
The Paymaster General has accordingly been
authorised to transfer the sum of 29.8.4. (nine
