protection from the harbour side could be ensured by a row of
piles connected together with chains.
(iv) The site is absolutely level and has an excellent earth. Ey being situated some four miles from the Island of Hong Kong in a direct line with Singapore it should not be unnecessarily screened in this direction.
(v) There is at present a small amount of cultivation on
in other the foreshore, the cost of which would be small; respects it is Crown land.
(vi) It possesses the advantage of being in a sheltered position in the event of typhoons, in fact Kowloon Bay is one
of the typhoon anchorages for junks. Being inside the harbour it is naturally well protected.
(vii) It has one disadvantage, i.e., it is rather badly screened from the north, as it is situated about one mile
from
a hill about 1,700 ft. high. There is a lower range of hills to the N.E., but to the Eastward, it would be comparatively open. This disadvantage would be felt more from a receiving than from a transmitting point of view. Taking into consideration that such a Station would only receive from similar stations, and as there does not appear any prospect of having a similar station further north than Hong Kong, this screening disadvantage would be considerably lessened.
(viii) Atmospheric conditions are moderately bad throughout the year, though not so bad as at Singapore. Considerable difficulty has been experienced on this Station in exchanging signals at greater distances than 1,800 miles, even under the
most favourable conditions.
