Hon. Colonial Secretary,

RECE REC 20 JAN 13

130

P. C. 38 Ward was found asleep at the lower Peak Tram terminus on the night of 17th. October when he ought to have been patrolling his section. He also assaulted the tram coalie and committed a nuisance in the station. The coolie also said he had been sleeping there for several nights previously. As he al- -ready had another serious report against him some months before it seemed to me that he was unlikely to do any good as a Police- -man here, so I told him to resign, but subsequently on his plead- -ing for another chance and promissing to reform I fined him instead and cautioned him as to dismissal if he offended again. Meanwhile he appears to have written in haste to

his father. He tells me that he stands in great awe of his father

and was afraid to tell him the truth, and so concocted instead the cock and bull story which the latter reproduces. He seems very penitent and pranises to write and tell his father the true facts.

He has, behaving well lately.
