£204 by £6 annually and of the Warders £96 to £144 by £12 annually.
They are all supplied with free quarters, fuel and light. There are 6 married quarters 3 of which are for Principal Warders and 1
for the Chief Warder. In view of the fact that promotion in the
Department is very limited I consider that the scale of salaries
should be revised as follows:-
10 Warders at £96 to £144 by £12 annually.
10 Warders at £156 to £150 by £12 annually.

3 Principal Warders at £200 to £220 by £10 biennially.
I also recommend that until additional married quarters can be
built house allowances of $600 per annum be made to 3 more Warders provided that they reside within 5 minutes walk of the Gaol.
In paragraph 5 the Petitioners should have excepted the Police from the general statement as to hours of leisure and holidays enjoyed by Civil Servants. The question of the provision of fire places in the quarters for unmarried men
will be looked into. The Petitioners are not correct in thinking
that an allowance of 815 a month is made for married Warders for
whom no married accommodation is available. There is no rule on
the subject.
I am investigating the question of making
some relaxation in the hours of duty and certain other minor
matters.

of recent years the European Prison Warders have been recruited locally from the Garrison. The service appears to be popular among the Royal Garrison Artillery and candidates are either time expired men or men who purchase their discharge to join the service. I shall be obliged if you will ascertain whether the salaries now proposed, with the modification in the rate at
