The newspapers of 9th. November contain reports
of the despatch by the Canton Government of Gunboats and Troops to
the West River and Sz Yap district. There does not appear to have been much serious fighting and the Canton Government appears to treat the trouble as one caused by marauding robbers only. Reports received by the Commodore from Officers commanding His liajesty's
Gunboats on the West River support this view and are to the effect
that order has now been restored but that a body of some 3,000
bandits is at large in the Sun Ui and Sun Ning Districts.
In Hongkong the Chinese regard the outbreak as
the beginning of a new revolution, but the information available
is too vague to base a definite opinion upon.
