-ting the export of stone for the Company is that the ownership
of the quarries from which it is taken is alleged to be in doubt.
This is a question which might have been
investigated and settled without the delay that has occurred and
without holding up the 37,000 tons of stone referred to in your
memorandum of the 28th. ultimo addressed to the Tu Tu. Lessrs.
Shewan Tomes and Company inform me that the Contractors from whom
they buy the stone are quite prepared to comply with the regula-
-tions; that they have been in the habit of purchasing stone in the
open market on the North and West Rivers and that one of them owns
a quarry his title to which has not been disputed.
6.
In these circumstances I shall be obliged if you will inform the Tu Tu, if you think it opportune to do so, that this Government is at a loss to understand why steps have not been
taken to settle a matter which is jeopardising the existence of an old established Company, which for over 20 years has drawn its
supply of limestone from the Canton Province to the great benefit of numbers of the inhabitants thereof and to enquire when the way
will be opened for the Company to resume its supplies of limestone.
I shall be much obliged if you will in due
course send me a copy of your report to Sir John Jordan on the
subject of tais embargo on the limestone for the Green Island Cement Company.
