116 41 Regulation 17. The points for the erection of the various boundary

stones should be properly set out by the Surveyor, who should also

mark them in the plan.

Regulation 18. The Surveyor shall be responsible for any mistake

in the plan, descriptions and marks as regards the various particu-

-lars.

Regulation 19. The mines shall under penalty keep strictly to the

boundaries fixed and shall make no encroachment.

Re ulation 20. All mine-owners whether Chinese or Foreigner, shall

be responsible for any damage caused to the property of any person

in consequence of any drain and other works improperly constructed and shall pay reasonable compensation.

Regulation 21. No mining operation shall take place within the following boundaries.

(1). Within five li on all sides of any battery, defence,

naval harbour, magazine or any other naval or military base, un-

-less approved by the officials in charge.

(2). Within two li on all sides of any official offices,

Associations, Pulic Institutions, Railway, Canal, Public Garden,

Government structure or important place in connection with water

with ways, unless the approval of the Authorities concerned.

(3). Within one Lion all sides of any tombs of the well-

-known Emperors, Sages, and famous statesmen of the previous generations. However, beyond 50 feet from any ordinary grave any work in respect of mining may be operated.

Regulation 22. In case of any obstacles caused by any field garden,

erave etc., within or without the boundaries of any mine, the

obstacles may be removed with the consent of the owner at a rate

of compensation agreed upon; and if the removal of such obstacles

is against the will of the people and is objected to by the owner, the deputy for mining I affairs shall discuss with the public and the locality and decide the case with due justice. However, no objection shall be allowed under the plea that the removal of such obstacles is prejudicial to Fung Shui. Regulation 23. In case of any obstacle which bars the progress of several mining parties in the operation of their respective mines,
