been let for $10,176. The increased estimate for the Observatory
Extension provides for some additional accommodation for the Director and his staff which I found on a recent inspection to be
necessary. I have included in anticipation of your approval a sum
of $32,000 for quarters for Public Works Overseers and Sanitary
Inspectors whose work more or less necessitates their residence on the Kowloon side. It is proposed to erect these quarters on Crown
Land adjoining Kowloon Inland Lot 1132 on which the house stands
which is being purchased out of Construction Funds for the Manager of the Railway. It has been found necessary to add to the accommo→
-dation for the Chinese and Indian Police at the Hung Hom Police
Station and also to provide quarters for a married Inspector at an
estimated cost of $6,500.

NEW TERRITORIES.
The recent attack on Cheung Chau Police Station has
emphasized the necessity for the erection of a station better
suited for Police requirements than the present building, which
was formerly a Chinese Customs Station. A convenient site has been
found and it is proposed to begin work early in the coming year.
$4,500 has been inserted for the construction of a market at Tai 0.
The present arrangements for the sale of foodstuffs are objection- -able from a sanitary point of view and caused an obstruction in
the main street. The revenue from stall fees is expected to yield
a good return on the money expended.
