the house at the end of the lane I pointed out where the Indian Sergeant or the other Constable lived. I cannot say which was there at the time. H. E. made no remark about the Indian Constables liv- -ing out. As we went through the Station again I informed H. E. of the duties which the men performed. One man on duty in the Station and one on patrol in the village.
The Chinese Detective lived in the Station. I occupied the matshed for about three months in the summer. I was at Cheung Chau until Sergeant Boulger relieved me on the 13th. November, 1911. In 1911 I did not leave the matshed until well on in Septem- -ber, 1911, to go into the station.
Mr. A. G. H. Fletcher.
I accompanied Sir F. Lugerd to Cheung Chau on one occa- -sion. I cannot remember when. About two years ago. I think in summer. I cannot remember who went with me. Sergeant Cordon was in charge. We went to the Police Station. Sergeant Cordon came down from the hill where he was living and I asked him if there was any room in the station where two or three of us could stay for a week end and he pointed out the rooms in the station. I cannot recol- -lect whether H. E. spoke to Sergeant Gordon about the disposition of the Police. I do not remember anything definite and cannot even fix the year. I have been to Cheung Chau so often.
Mr. A. F. Churchill.
First Assistent D. P. W. Permite for the erection of natsheds would only be issued from the Building Ordinance Office or the Survey Office. There is no record of any permit having been issued in the years 1905 or 1908 for the erection of a matshed for the Police Sergeant at Cheung Chau. There would be a fee payable for a permit. If a permit were issued free to someone outside the service there would be a record. If I gave permission of any kind
to an officer or someone outside the service to occupy Crown Land I should keep a record of it. I arrived in the Colony in December, 1910. It is for the, C. S. 0. to give permission to occupy Crown Land free of charge. That is the practice now. Form P. 50 at the
time,
