The value of a Colonial appointment depends upon ao many circumstances besides the salary that the Secretary of State often cannul judge what would be acceptable to an officet. Applicants for promotion should therefore, in their own interests, state as precisely pressible what they desire, either specifying certain appointments, or at least mentioning the Colonies to which they would or would not be willing to go, and the auigunt of salary which they think that they may reasonably expect,
