the interior, should there arise any financial crisis, the Republic will be involved in absolute destruction. When we speak or think of this we are utterly heart-broken and filled with fear. At the same time we realise that to reap the benefit of good deeds good deeds must first be done. Do you the people of China desire to be the subjects of a perfedt Republic that so you may secure your freedom? If so, the rich should never hoard up their wealth for their own enjoyment without the least heed to the Government, while the poor should by no means fail to take some responsibility in the scheme or consider themselves free of any duty to their fatherland. Thus such a union of strength as may be compared to formation of the ocean by the collection of numerous rivers, for the relief of the present imminent danger is indeed a righteous enterprise beyond all that have been promoted during past ages and will be ever fresh in the memory of the people for hundreds and thousands of generations. Since the Chinese residents abroad have been well known for their patriotism and generosity, we believe that they will surely have great sympathy for this scheme. En- -quiries show that the contributions raised in Singapore have amounted to $3,000,000, in Australia 8400,000 and in America 8300,000, and in one case a Chinese lady in Vancouver on board the *Empress of Japan subscribed $350 in American gold currency. What admiration and appreciation her patriotism for her fatherland has aroused. Will not the Chinese residents be much moved by her example and feel their patriotism and enthusiasm aroused thereby ? Certainly they will. Now our Society has accepted the instructions of the Canton Government to take up the responsibility of the

scheme with all Chinese abroad, and we can never believe that in

performance of food deeds others are not as eager as we. So we hope that you will display much enthusiasm for the scheme to relieve the present burden, and that those who have obtained any

subscription books from this Society will send in without delay the subscriptions they have secured. Since the enterprise is

promoted in the interests of the nation, and we all have some

responsibility
